Tshala Muana, of course. She is the best.
Which is not to say that I don't like Mbilia Bel (because I do) or Mpongo Love or Nahawa Doumbia, Aster Aweke, Myriam Makeba, Abeti, Fanta Damba, Bella Bellow, Sali Sidibe, Kandia Kouyate, Amy Koita, Faya Tess, Jolie Detta...

My list includes Mbilia Bell, Yondo Sister, Tshala Muana, Pierrette Adams, Mpongo Love, Miriam Makeba and Monica Seka. Deese is sweet but has left us wanting to hear more. Faya Tess produced a good album (the last one, I think) that I played a lot. There are others: one-album wonders that I bought.

Probably it is better to consider the best for a given period but it is really hard. Mbilia Bell has to be the best but it very unfair since her best music was produced in the early to mid -80s. Tshala Muana ruled for a while, then Yondo Sister was a staple around East and Southern Africa until now when the line-up is muddled with an album here and there. That is, considering Congolese music. Right now I would say Yondo Sister is the lady because she is active giving concerts and I have seen her live in Atlanta.

I also like Viviane Ndour a lot.
But Mbilia Bel was the best.

I have cds of Angelique, Oumarou (sp!), and Rokia but their music has failed to sink into my system. I have a couple of others including Nyolo, Awa Maiga, Senegales lady who sung Si Si with Koffi, etc.). I think I am inhibited by the language barrier especially when relics matter. By the way, who is Leslie who sung with Magic System. We like that pop song.
